Australia's national broadcaster reported on Wednesday that four people had been killed and seven injured after Papua New Guinea's police opened fire on the crowd of students.
Other media reports suggest up to 20 students have been hospitalized, though officials are yet to confirm the number of causalities.
It' s believed that the students were attempting to march from their university campus to the PNG parliament, however they were prevented by police.
According to PNG police, the march was deemed illegal as it did not get the necessary approval to proceed.
Political unrest has been brewing in the pacific nation for more than a month, led by students at the nation's two major universities, over the prime minister's handling of corruption allegations and economic mismanagement.
