The need for substantial Energy Storage capacity to meet the UK’s ambitious energy commitments for 2020, is very well known. However, the progress towards what needs to be done is extremely slow. Furthermore, practically all of the energy storage currently being installed is relatively small-scale and is limited to storage for the electricity network. Since electricity supplies only about one quarter of the UK’s total energy demand, whereas heat energy demand amounts to more than one half of the total, the mismatch is obvious; yet very little is being done in the heat storage sector.
