What is a character letter?
A letter to ask the judge to be lenient from people you know including family, friends and past employers if you are convicted by a jury or plead guilty in a crime.
Most important:
The letter should speak from the heart
Advice:
Don't use a canned template from an attorney or friend - The letter should be authentic and come from the heart
Few things that should never be discussed in the letter:
• The person being convicted could never do this sort of thing
• The person being convicted is innocent
Things you want to include in the character letter:
• Who are you in relation to the person before the court?
• How long have you known them?
• What a great friend the person before the court has been to you
• What a great employee
Note: Not a good idea to have friends that haven't known the person being sentenced long or your mom/dad to do the character letter. All other friends, family and past employers are good
