Description : The medical waste has substantially increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the waste is being treated through the incineration process, yielding a large volume of medical waste ash. The ash contains high levels of dioxins, leachable alkali chlorides, carbon constituents, and heavy metals. Land disposal of this ash, as the common practice method, may result in groundwater pollution if the landfill site is inadequately designed and/or operated. ACI-Yarmouk University Chapter has proposed the idea to evaluate the feasibility of using Covid-19 waste ash as a precursor for the development of environmental-friendly geopolymer concrete. Previous work on similar ash chemistry (such as coal ash) has shown high potential toward the production of high-quality geopolymers with enhanced environmental aspects. Implementation of the proposed idea will lead to competitive merits in terms of cost, carbon dioxide emissions, energy, and environmental benefits.
