Satchmo, from The Spider Gang, previews Richmond's season opener against the Virginia Cavaliers. The game takes place at Scott Stadium August 31 with kickoff slated for 6PM. This is the Spiders BCS paycheck game. UR and UVA have played several times in recent years. The Cavs have won the last two (2018 & 2022). The Spiders shocked the Cavs in 2016. 3rd year Virginia coach Tony Elliott is hoping for a turnaround season for the Cavs who have struggled in his first two seasons. The ACC preseason poll picked UVA to finish 16th of the 17 ACC squads. However, Elliott believes UVA is ready to win some of the close games they lost in 2023 (3-9, 2-6 ACC). On the other hand, Richmond is expected to contend for another CAA Championship and FCS Playoff spot. Despite this I'd expect UVA to be a double digit favorite in this one. It's FCS v. BCS. Richmond spoiling the Cavs opener would be a significant upset, but they could make it interesting!
