El Salvador is a Central American country with 200 miles of coastline, more than 170 volcanoes, multiple archeological sites with Mayan ruins and a rich coffee and cacao farming tradition. With so much to offer, El Salvador is a wonderful travel destination. Unfortunately, the country’s reputation abroad usually has more to do with danger.
Ravaged by a civil war in the 1980s and plagued by gang violence in the decades since, this Central America’s smallest country has been deemed a no-go destination for many travelers. However, significant strides in tourism, including cracking down on crime, improving roads, and investing in new hotels and flight routes, have earned this tropical destination another look.
Acajutla is El Salvador's principal seaport located off the pacific coast. This port is situated in an industrial area. Despite being located in an industrial area, we had a warm and colorful welcome by El Salvadorans upon disembarking our ship. Most passengers partake in cruise organized tours as there are no private tour operators in port. For tour options, guests can choose from San Salvador city tour, Mayan ruins, coffee plantations, hike dormant volcanoes or visit historical churches in nearby towns.
We chose an 8-hour excursion of San Salvador city tour with Norwegian Jewel. We traveled inland to San Salvador for a cultural immersion in the alluring capital of El Salvador. Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado founded the city in 1525, but there isn't a single colonial building left as earthquakes had leveled them over the centuries. San Salvador is El Salvador's capital and largest city.
