STORYLINE:
On February 5th 2014 the official Olympic medals arrived in the Russian resort town of Sochi, ahead of the start of the Winter Games.
All 1,254 medals were made by the Moscow-based Adamas jewelry company and designed in metal and glass.
Mountain Olympic Village mayor and Olympic champion, Svetlana Zhurova, on Wednesday said the medals are "beautiful, they are wonderful, and they are very much our own."
3,500 athletes will compete for the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic medals.
The Winter Games run through February 23.

A burst of fireworks filled the night sky over Sochi on February 7th as Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the Winter Olympics open.
More than with most games, these Olympics are closely tied to the leader of the host nation.
Putin personally pushed for the right to stage them in the Black Sea summer resort of Sochi and the nearby Caucasus Mountains slopes.
He then spent 51 billion US dollars to transform Sochi into a winter sports paradise, in a project fraught with corruption, environmental abuses and fears of militant extremism from nearby Chechnya and Dagestan.

In a powerful symbol of international sports detente, Russian President Vladimir Putin dropped in on US Olympic headquarters on February 14th to chat about the Winter Games and the upcoming Russia-US Hockey showdown.
He even wore a red Team USA pin on his lapel.
Putin spent about half an hour at USA House in Sochi's Olympic Park, sitting on a couch talking with US Olympic Committee chairman Larry Probst and CEO Scott Blackmun.
