Experience the tranquil beauty of Bongeunsa Temple, a 1,200-year-old Buddhist haven nestled in Seoul's vibrant Gangnam district. This 20-minute walking tour video takes you on a captivating journey, where every step reveals the harmonious coexistence of Korea's ancient traditions and its dynamic present.
Bongeunsa Temple offers a unique experience, standing just steps away from the world-renowned Starfield COEX Mall. As you enter the temple grounds, the city's hustle quickly fades away, replaced by a sense of calm and serenity typically found in remote mountain temples.
The temple grounds are spread across a forested hillside. Just as you enter the temple, you easily forget about the busy city behind you.
First notable part of the temple is the Jinyeomun Gate that has paintings of the Sacheonwang (Four Heavenly Kings), each of whom is believed to watch over one cardinal direction of the world (north, south, east, west).
Next, we pass under Beopwangru (The Dharma Hall), from where we ascend the stairs to the main temple courtyard. On the far side of the courtyard you can see the beautiful Daewoongjeon (The Main Buddha Hall), which is the place where the main ceremonies and prayers are happening. Inside, there are three majestic Buddha statues, and on the exterior walls there are two sets of paintings: the Palsangdo (The Eight Scenes from the Buddha’s Life) and the Shimudo (Ox-Herding Murals). In the center of the courtyard is a three tier stone pagoda.
On the left side of the courtyard are is Unhadang Hall, monks’ practicing place, and on the right side is the historic Seonbuldang Hall, where monks’ exams were held in the past. Today, Gwanseeumbosal (The Bodhisattva of Compassion) is resting on its main altar.
To the right of the Daewoongjeon (The Main Buddha Hall), and behind the Seonbuldang Hall, lies the Jijangjeon Hall. The exterior walls to this beautiful hall are adorned with menacing murals of the Buddhist underworld, the Ten Kings of the Underworld, as well as Jijangbosal (The Bodhisattva of the Afterlife).
Between the Daewoongjeon (The Main Buddha Hall) and Jijangjeon Hall, there are narrow stairs that lead to several smaller shrines that are little more hidden in the forest. From there is a path that leads to the main monument of the temple, The Great Statue of Maitreya Buddha. The statue is 23 meters tall and at its base are carved Vajra Warriors to help protect the Buddha from harm.
Further on the left from the Maitreya Buddha is Panjeon (Tripitaka Hall) which enshrines 81 volumes of the Avatamsaka Sutra engraved in 343 wooden blocks.
Opposite to the Maitreya Buddha is the Mireukjeon (Maitreya Hall), which can be passed under just like the Beopwang Dharma Hall.
Whether you decide to walk around Mireukjeon or under it, you will come to the Bell Pavilion, which houses the sound instruments that are played before the ceremonies to wish for salvation of all beings. From there, it is only a short walk before we come back to the main courtyard.
As we conclude our walk, we return to the temple entrance, where a souvenir shop offers unique Buddhist items.
Bongeunsa also offers various activities for visitors to engage with Buddhist culture, including Temple Stay programs and cultural workshops.
