“A symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything” (Gustav Mahler). David Briggs first fell in love with the music of Gustav Mahler as the 17-year old Principal Viola of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Completely under Mahler’s spell for the past three decades, one of his most major projects has been to transcribe the great orchestral symphonies (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8) for the organ. In this respect he is unique in the world and his performances and recordings have met with considerable critical acclaim in the international musical press. The sound world is certainly different to the orchestra, but encompasses an equal breadth and vivacity of tonal palette and kaleidoscopic impact. His transcription of the remarkable Second Symphony, often called ‘The Resurrection' was premiered at St John the Divine in New York City in 2013 - since then David has performed it over twenty-five times on three continents. This is music on the grandest, most transcendent scale and is frequently overwhelming in its emotional effect on the listener. The great organ and acoustic of Blackburn Cathedral add great éclat to this remarkable music, aided and abetted by two stunning Canadian soloists and the magnificent choral contribution of the City of Birmingham Choir and the Renaissance Singers.
