Johnnie Walker is the world's biggest-selling brand of blended Scotch whisky. Established in the mid-19th Century, Johnnie Walker has a long distilling history and today is sold in a majority of countries around the world.
The "color" labels and other whiskies in the core range. The Black Label is aged for 12 years and is widely regarded as a standard bearer for the blended category, and is probably the most familiar Johnnie Walker expression.. Depending on the label of Johnnie Walker produced, up to 35 to 40 different malts and grains can contribute to the blend.
The brand has its origins in John Walker's grocery shop in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He died in 1857, three years before blended whisky was made legal in Scotland, and so it was his son and grandsons that were mainly responsible for developing the Walker's blend. The distinctive square bottle was introduced in 1860.
In 1908, the name was changed from Walker's Kilmarnock Whiskies to Johnnie Walker Whisky, and the image of the striding Regency gentleman was created by the cartoonist Tom Brown. In the following year Black Label and Red Label were introduced.
Johnnie Walker joined Distillers Company in 1925, which was bought in turn by Guinness in 1986. Since 1997, the brand has been a cornerstone of the Diageo line-up.
