Have you ever opened a package of silver coins only to find a blotchy, white layer (kind of like spilled milk) on one of your coins? Today we’re talking a little about milk spotting. Think of this as a basic primer - an introduction to a much-debated topic.
Too long, didn’t watch:
Silver is a highly chemically reactive metal. This is why it so easily tones, tarnishes, and yes - gets the dreaded milk spots. It’s generally accepted that milk spots are caused by the manufacturing process, which is why we refer to it as “an unfortunate birthmark”. It’s also believed there are many potential causes in the minting process. This makes sense, as every mint uses slightly different processes and techniques, yet milk spotting remains pervasive.
Every solution we’ve seen to clean milk spots causes some level of damage to a coin, so we can’t recommend a good cleaning solution either. On the plus side, your milky coin is still pure silver. It’ll never be a PCGS-graded coin or win a beauty pageant, but it’s what's on the inside that counts anyway.
