The Kingdom was united in its grief.
Across Scotland, Northern Ireland and, of course, Wales, thousands of people who could not be at the funeral procession for Diana, the Princess Of Wales found other ways to remember.
A lone piper -- Jack Taylor -- playing the traditional Scottish lament "Flowers of the Forest".
Normally the tune commemorates the loss of Scotland's youth in battle.
But today it was played for the loss of a young princess.
The Duke of Fife Park at Braemar, near the Royal Family's Balmoral holiday retreat should have been hosting the Braemar Highland games.
The Games had been cancelled, but instead hundreds of people still came, to pay their respects while 500 miles to the south in London, hundreds of thousands lined the funeral route for Princess Diana.
In the middle of Belfast, streets which would normally be bustling with Saturday shoppers, were deserted.
These scenes were repeated all across the country.
Most shops and businesses remained closed until the afternoon.
Books of condolences have been filling up with messages for Diana and her children, William and Harry.
And Wales bade an emotional farewell to its Princess as large crowds gathered in Cardiff.
Mourners packed the green outside Llandaff Cathedral which became an extension of Westminster Abbey and a focus for Wales's grief at the loss of Diana.
Inside the cathedral, a Rhondda Valley Male Voice Choir, Cor Meibion Morlais, gave its own tribute to Diana - the Welsh hymn "Calon Lan" (Happy Heart), one of her favourites.
Princess Diana visited here on Saint David's Day in 1991.
It was the day she and Prince Charles introduced Prince William to the Welsh people on his first public engagement.
On Saturday, the 12th century building became a focus of grief for the people of Wales, many of whom will miss Diana as if she were a member of their own family.
A huge video screen was erected outside the cathedral, giving those who couldn't make it to London an opportunity to watch the funeral procession.
Many were overcome with emotion as they listened to Elton John singing a forceful, updated version of his hit song "Candle in the Wind" in honour of "England's rose".
At the end of the service, silence, as the people remembered their princess.
