Angela and I founded a piano trio together 8 years ago. We have also played duo recitals together to critical acclaim on numerous occasions.
Sadly, we are now stranded on opposite ends of the earth due to the global pandemic, but our friendship and love for great chamber music endures.
We therefore present to you the 3rd movement (Largo) from Chopin's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65.
Apart from the piano, Chopin's favourite instrument was the cello. It speaks volumes that he chose to perform the last three movements of this sonata with his friend the cellist Auguste Franchomme at his last public concert, at the Salle Pleyel, Paris, on 16 February 1848, a year before he died.
What do you think was going through Chopin's mind as he wrote this piece? What do you feel when you listen to this piece of music?
