(5 Dec 2016) A prominent 'No' campaigner in Italy described the rejection of a referendum proposing constitutional reforms and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's subsequent resignation as "extraordinary" early on Monday.
Alfonso Gianni, who is a member of the Civic Committee for the 'No' campaign, said the defeat reflected the love of Italians for the principles of the country's constitution.
Exit polls showed Renzi's proposals losing by a margin of about 60 percent to 40 percent.
Supporters of the 'No' campaign celebrated as they listened to Renzi's resignation speech at their headquarters in Rome.
Renzi said he would tell a cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon that he was resigning and that he would then tender his resignation to the Italian president after two and a-half years in office.
Italy's president will have to decide whether to accept Renzi's resignation.
Renzi is expected to be asked to stay on at least until Parliament passes a budget bill due this month and possibly revise the electoral law before a date is set for a national vote.
