On November 26, PTI chief Imran Khan announced his party’s decision to quit all provincial assemblies. Now, this isn’t the first time the PTI is threatening to quit or has quit assemblies.
Back in 2014, PTI had quit National Assembly over then PML-N govt’s reluctance to form an inquiry commission to probe rigging allegations in the general elections of 2013.
A couple of month ago, in April, when Imran Khan was ousted through a vote of no confidence, PTI MNAs submitted resignations.
Since then, Khan refused to engage with the political leadership and has been directing his grievances towards the military establishment. It’s been over six months and none of his demands – whether it was to influence the army chief’s selection or force early elections, none of his demands have been met despite leading a lengthy protest movement.
Perhaps realising that, Khan appears to have changed gears.
His announcement, however, has sparked a debate on dissolution of an assembly vs resignations, and what the PTI’s options are.
Well, to understand that, let’s start with the provincial assemblies.
