Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje (now North Macedonia), was a Catholic nun and missionary known for her incredible devotion to helping the poor and sick. She joined the Sisters of Loreto at a young age and moved to India, where she taught for many years before founding the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Her organization focused on caring for the "poorest of the poor," establishing hospices, homes for people with HIV/AIDS, orphanages, and centers for the blind, disabled, and leprosy patients. Mother Teresa's selfless dedication to serving those in need earned her worldwide recognition and numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Despite facing criticism and controversy over some of her views and the conditions in her facilities, she remains an iconic figure for her unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of the less fortunate. Mother Teresa passed away in 1997, but her legacy of compassion and humanitarian work continues to inspire people around the world.
