Scientists have been raising an alarm bell, stressing that continued greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions will increase the risk of severe (if not irreversible) impacts on our ecosystem and society.
To fight climate change, it is key to decarbonise the economy and strengthen GHGs absorption capacities. In March 2020, the European Commission adopted a legislative proposal for a European climate law, setting the objective and framework for the EU to become climate-neutral by 2050.
However, the journey to carbon neutrality will be long. In the meantime, stronger adaptation efforts are needed to minimise the impacts of extreme weather events and natural disasters that may arise from climate change.
Mitigation and adaptation are complementary approaches. Adaptation is mostly done on a local scale, and those who take effective adaptation measures can expect to reap the benefits. On the other hand, mitigation is a collective action problem, since emission reductions in one part of the world will benefit everybody else.
