While travelling across the Great Britain, Haydn developed a “popular
style”, characterized by a frequent use of folk music: a way of composition that created music having great popular appeal but retaining a learned and rigorous musical structure. During his life he composed altogether 62 Sonatas for piano, which have not probably reached the
popularity that may deserve, though the level of difficulty remains strictly comparable with Beethoven and Mozart’s Piano Sonatas. The Sonata No.23 in F major opens with a crispy toccata-style figuration and is enriched by sudden dips to the minor mode. Between this and the flashy, gamesome finale we will find a sonata-form movement that varies and
develops its contredanse theme with characteristic guile—a rhapsodic F minor siciliano.
