The piece is inspired by Medieval Christian Iconography, namely the Voroneț Monastery in Romania (also called the "Sistine Chapel of the East"). The Devil is represented in The Eternal Lake Of Fire, seated on a five-headed dragon. In his right hand he holds a black cup, enjoying the sight of Judas being swallowed whole by the dragon. In the upper register, Archangel Michael announces the death of time and the Last Judgment (the trumpet is replaced with a Romanian instrument, called bucium). The wild beasts hold different meanings and they strongly remind me of Roman Orphic mosaics/frescoes. In fact, even the representation of Christ is almost identical to that of Orpheus. The sinners are brought forth by these wild beasts, symbolizing that no matter how, when or where they had perished, they were all equal in this event, and that no one could escape it.
