Journalist James Rampton says southern Lebanon “would look a lot like Gaza” if Unifil had not been there during a press preview on Sky News on Monday.
The Unifil (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) was created by the United Nations Security Council in 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and assist the Lebanese government in restoring its effective authority in the area.
“It’s made a massive difference so to withdraw it now would be catastrophic,” he added.
His comments follow calls by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging the UN secretary general to withdraw the peacekeepers from Israel before he accused them of “providing a human shield to Hezbollah terrorists”.
