STORYLINE
The search continued on Thursday near the southern Portuguese village of Odiaxere for the body of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann, after a letter and map sent to a Dutch newspaper claimed it was located in wasteland there.
Residents were shocked to hear the body could be buried near their village, as reported in De Telegraaf on Wednesday.
The newspaper published an anonymous letter it received with a map showing a remote location in where the four year old might be buried.
The location marked on the map is remote scrubland near Odiaxere, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from where the girl vanished while on holiday with her family.
Police investigating Madeleine's disappearance, from a Portuguese hotel more than a month ago, said they were checking the Dutch newspaper tip.
"The people of Odiaxere will be in shock if the news in the Dutch newspaper turns out to be true," said the village mayor Luis Bandarra.
"But whatever the situation people are actively searching, looking for ways to help find the body of young Maddy, if it is the case that she is buried in our village. We hope not, we hope that she is in good health. The entire population is hoping for that," he said.
On Thursday the parents of Madeleine McCann rebuked the media for publishing details of the tip-off about what might have happened to their daughter.
Police had said they may use sniffer dogs to search the area marked on the map, but no police could be seen in the general area, local media reported.
Police say they have followed up dozens of leads, included reports of sightings of Madeleine by the public, but none has yielded results.
Madeleine disappeared on May 3 from a hotel in Praia da Luz, a resort town in Portugal's Algarve region. Her parents had left her and her 2-year-old twin siblings alone in their hotel room while they dined at a nearby restaurant.
Since then, the couple has launched an international campaign to find the girl, enlisting the aid of celebrities including soccer star David Beckham and J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series.
Kate and Gerry McCann have also travelled to Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Morocco to plead for help in finding their daughter.
They fear Madeleine may have been taken out of Portugal and say they have no plans to return to Britain without her.
They also visited the Vatican, where Pope Benedict XVI blessed them and a photograph of Madeleine.
