STORYLINE
Italy's national football team arrived home on Wednesday after a tournament that ended in disappointment for the players and the fans.
Italy failed to make it through to the quarterfinals and failed to impress both on and off the pitch.
Italy's visit to Portugal was not a good one.
On the field the team were disappointing, off the field they were a public relations disaster.
Italy failed to live up to the promise of a new, attacking side and their behaviour won them few fans either.
From Francesco Totti's spit in the face of Denmark's Christian Poulsen to rows between players and press, and the bitter accusations that accompanied their exit, Italy succeeded only in matching the lack of decorum that accompanied their 2002 World Cup campaign.
There, South Korea beat Italian manager Giovanni Trappatoni's side in the second round with the Ecuadorian referee taking much of the blame.
This time Denmark and Sweden have been accused of conspiring against Italy by drawing two-all in Tuesday night's match.
That result meant that whatever happened in Italy's game with Bulgaria, the Italians would not progress.
Trappatoni's days as manager of the Italian national team now seem to be numbered, with former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi tipped to take over the post.
