Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has arrived in Spain after fleeing his country amid accusations of terrorism and conspiracy following the disputed presidential election in July.
Gonzalez seeks asylum in Spain, where he landed with his wife and Spanish officials at Torrejon de Ardoz military air base.
Venezuela's electoral authority declared ruling president Nicolas Maduro the winner with 51% of the vote, but opposition tallies indicate a victory for Gonzalez.
The opposition and Latin American leaders have rejected Maduro's victory, sparking protests and arrests.
Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed that Gonzalez left and requested asylum, while Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares emphasized their commitment to Venezuelans' rights.
Gonzalez's flight to Spain was facilitated by a Spanish Air Force plane at his request.
The Venezuela Prosecutor's Office has issued an arrest warrant for Gonzalez, accusing him of terrorism-related crimes, citing his failure to appear for summons regarding an opposition website that posted election results.
Despite Gonzalez's departure, opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipa urges continued efforts to ensure recognition of their election win.
