A tribute to the Polish poet on the occasion of his centenary. Czesław Miłosz's "trust in the delicious joy-bringing potential of art and intellect was protected by strong bulwarks built from the knowledge and experience that he had gained at first hand and at great cost," wrote Seamus Heaney, upon Miłosz's death in 2004. "His mind, to put it another way, was at once a garden . . . and a citadel. The fortifications surrounding the garden were situated on a high mountain whence he could view the kingdoms of the world, recognize their temptations and their tragedies, and communicate to his readers both the airiness and the insights that his situation afforded."
