Mental health matters in the operating room! Not only can there be serious anesthesia and surgery complications from mental health challenges, but there can even be other complications, like weight gain after surgery!
Kinesiaphobia is just one example of one of the complications that unmanagied anxiety and depression before surgery can lead to. If patients are afraid to move after surgery, they're at higher risk of complications like blood clots, infections, and frozen joints. There are other complications, as well, which is why I always want my patients to feel empowered before surgery to take control of the health outcomes. Anesthesia can hurt or help the mental health struggles, depending on the patient and the anesthesiologist.
