5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jermaine Kelly, Bus Driver:
"This bus is a lot more smoother, its a lot more gentler and the sound of the engine, you don't hear it as much so its not really annoying you a lot because when you're driving a normal diesel bus, it's a lot louder and as a long day goes on that kind of does get to you - making it quite annoying. So this bus is a lot more smoother."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Poynton, Director of Product Development & Innovation at Wrights:
"What we have in the back is 1.9 turbo diesel euro-four car engine, directly driving into an electric generator, generating electricity which is then fed along the orange cable to the battery packs. The batteries in turn then develop the power which we can then use to drive the rear axel."

10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Poynton, Director of Product Development & Innovation at Wrights:
"I would like to see in the future that hybrid buses just become an everyday occurrence in every city in the UK and across the world - reducing the emissions from the vehicles and producing much less carbon dioxides. And also with high fuel costs, using less fuel and saving money for the bus operators."

12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Graham Goodwin, Transport For London Spokesperson:
"Well we have the largest bus fleet in the western world here in London - about 8000 buses running 700 bus routes and we're pushing forward with all sorts of environmental advances. All of our buses are now fitted with particular traps, there is push to actually clean up the standard diesel emissions but it's quite right that we should be leading the way to find out what technologies actually have a part to play with the future bus fleets and clearly running these buses on the route that we are running, running them against standard diesel buses because it is an excellent yardstick to find out what environmental advantages and what economic advantages this technology is going to have."

14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Graham Goodwin, Transport For London Spokesperson:
"I think what you've got to look at is that it's not just about fuel economy, it's not even just about the kind of emissions you can expect to get from this technology. It's actually how well this technology copes with the real world environment. This is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most demanding urban environments in the world. The buses that we run our fleet run tens of thousands of miles a year, on very stop start cycles on very many of those routes. What we need to find out is, does this vehicle work in the environment in which it would have to work if we are going to invest in the future."

SUGGESTED READIN:
With daily warnings of climate damage caused by carbon dioxide emissions, the transport authority in the UK capital city, London, have begun a new scheme to trial six environmentally friendly, hybrid vehicles.
The buses are cleaner, quieter and use less fuel than a standard diesel bus -- making them better for the environment.
The trial is part of an ongoing programme that strives to implement technology that will help reduce emissions
