Chepstowe is a family owned vineyard, 25km west from Victoria's Ballarat. Although the region may to this day be better known for its gold rush era, as a wine region, it is rather exciting, with an incredibly cool climate that sees rather dry summers, and produces wonderfully complex wines in small amounts by micro-farms such as this rare gem. A true discovery for us here at Good Pair Days, we are pleased to introduce you to the Thain family, who in 2004 had a 'mad moment' when they decided to buy an established 10 year old vineyard, and haven’t looked back. Matt Thain has a passion for the outdoors and an appreciation for the land, respecting and nurturing the rich grey loam that gives so much character to their complex wines.
The resilient vineyard has seen it all, surviving fires, drought and the untimely passing of Matt's young wife. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz are handpicked and produced with as little intervention as possible, engaging winemaker Alex Byrne (Byrne Wines and Noisy Ritual Winery) to 'finish' the wines post harvest, assisting Matt in creating something rather special in Chepstowe Vineyard.
Wonderfully deep colour and just the right amount of 'bottle age' savoury notes. There are flavours for days here, loaded with peppercorn aromatics, and underneath you'll find blackberries, aniseed, black plums, mulberries, violets and a hint of pencil shavings. Going back to the glass is like walking past the herb garden on a warm, sunny day - with rosemary, bay and thyme. A really elegant, savoury and slightly salty finish.
