Sprain vs. Strain
Understanding the difference between a muscle strain and a sprain is key for proper treatment and prevention. Both injuries occur during physical activity but affect different body structures.
🔹 Muscle Strain:
• Injury: Muscle or tendon (tissue connecting muscle to bone).
• Causes: Overstretching, tearing, excessive or repetitive movements.
• Symptoms: Pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty moving affected muscle.
• Common Areas: Neck, back, hamstring, quad, calf.
• Prevention: Warm-up, stretch, gradually increase exercise intensity, proper techniques.
🔸 Muscle Sprain:
• Injury: Ligament (fibrous tissue connecting bones within a joint).
• Causes: Joint forced beyond normal range, sudden pivoting, twisting, or impact.
• Common Areas: Ankle, wrist, knee.
• Prevention: Maintain muscle strength, flexibility, use protective gear, proper hydration and diet, warm-up, correct exercise techniques, gradual exercise progression.
