"There were a few things that intrigued me as a young girl: boys, loud music, and boys playing loud music. Morfem, to me, is the embodiment of all three.
I get it, they’re not exactly “boys”--they’re grown up men with children of their own and musical careers longer than half the years I’ve been alive. But in all states except physical, they embody the rowdiness, mischief, and chaos of hormone-ridden youth. The fuzzy opening track of this
Sounds From The Corner performance, for a simple example, is an exercise in Not Taking Things Seriously. “Hey, Tuan Botimen” sneers at the namesake pill addict with sass like no other:
“Dia bercermin seolah memandang John Travolta,
Merasa psychedelia padahal Rahwana.”
When social media feeds and streaming services of today are flooded with increasingly pretentious song titles, lyrics, and highly curated internet personas, the guys from Morfem are doing the complete opposite (180 Derajat, if you would allow the pun). No filters are necessary when all you want to do is be honest. Their peculiar sense of humor, spontaneous foul mouths, and brazen personalities are living reminders of what matters the most in making music, or any form of art in general: genuineness.
When you don’t take yourself too seriously, play becomes an act of discovery. You never know what’s beyond that first step. Besides, other people won't take you seriously if you can't laugh at yourself and your work sometimes. Get off your high horse and come down to the pit! -- Zara Z.
