This NIO is aimed at a broad audience. In terms of EV startups, NIO appears to be on the right track. The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has released five models in only five years. Given the company's long history, this is a remarkable achievement. NIO presently offers four vehicles: three crossovers, a big sedan, and the EP9, an electric hypercar.
The EC6 coupe-crossover, ES6 mid-size crossover, ES8 full-size crossover, and ET7 flagship sedan, all of which will be available in Chinese dealerships by early 2022, round out NIO's current lineup. NIO, on the other hand, isn't stopping there; the business has just released its sixth model. The ET5, as it's known, is aiming for general appeal and Tesla Model 3 sales.
Its design is similar to that of its larger brother, the ET7. That should come as no surprise, given that, like the larger sedan, the ET5 was designed with aerodynamics and efficiency in mind. However, there are minor variations in the lights and front bumper. The taller foglight housings and aero intakes on the corners are the most visible features. The back is also shorter and has a more rounded tail. The pods on the roof are for the semi-autonomous driving system, in case you were wondering.
The ET5 measures 188.6 inches (4,790 millimeters) from bumper to bumper for those interested in measurements. It measures 77.1 inches (1,960 mm) in width and 59 inches (59 mm) in height. Meanwhile, the ET5 has a 113.7-inch wheelbase (2,888 mm). With such numbers, it's safe to say it belongs to the upper echelon of compact executive sedans.
When it comes to the interior, it's similar to most EVs these days. There aren't many buttons, and instead of buttons, there are more screens and open spaces. The large infotainment panel, which is more square than rectangular, takes center stage. It also boasts a 10.5-inch flat-screen display that serves as the instrument cluster. There are 256 colors in the ambient lighting, and the audio is provided by a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system.
In addition, the ET5 offers a feature called PanoCinema. It's described as a "panoramic and immersive digital cockpit" by the company. It incorporates AR and VR technologies as a result of the automaker's collaboration with NREAL. NREAL created AR glasses that are only available at NIO, and it will be fascinating to watch them in action.
Now it's time to talk about the powertrain system. The NIO ET5 is powered by two motors and comes with three battery options. The motors' combined output is 483 horsepower (360 kilowatts) and 516 foot-pounds (700 Newton-meters) of torque. 75 kWh, 100 kWh, and 150 kWh batteries are available.
According to NIO, the ET5 can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 4.3 seconds. According to Chinese official estimates, the 75 kWh battery has a range of 341 miles (550 km), the 100 kWh battery has a range of 435 miles (700 km), and the 150 kWh battery has a range of 621 miles (1,000 km).
Customers will begin receiving ET5s in September 2022, according to the business. The ET5 costs 328,000 yuan ($ 51,447 at current exchange rates), which does not include government incentives. The price drops to 258,000 yuan, or just over $ 40,000, with it. NIO will sell the ET5 in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark in 2022, in addition to China and Norway. For the time being, no plans for the United States have been mentioned.
