"We are now trying to re-engage. The new administration under President Bush is re-engaged with Pakistan and we're trying to mend the relationship. There are strengths in the relationship, there are problems in the relationship, but the good news is that relations are back on track. We are re-defining and re-structuring them for the new century and for the fact that we now live in a post-Cold War period. So I think re-engagement is always better for all nations."

10. SOUNDBITE: (Urdu) Doctor Maleeha Lodhi, Ambassador of Pakistan to the U-S:
"We have always seen our expatriate community - not just in the United States, in New York, but everywhere in the world - as an enormous resource that contributes directly and indirectly to Pakistan's economy. They send, for example, remittances to Pakistan. Our foreign exchange reserves are still precariously poised, so any foreign exchange coming into Pakistan is a great help. They also invest in Pakistan and help their less privileged brothers and sisters with social projects. So, for that we're always thankful to the community because we feel that their hearts still beat with the land of their birth. But at the same time, we also would like the community to be more politically involved here, to become part of the political process, as other communities have become, and also to contribute more, as they have done, to their land of adoption. I think the Pakistani-American community has contributed to the dynamism of the American economy in so many different ways."

We are in number here, tremendous numbers and everybody comes out, and New York accommodates everybody. So we have feelings for New York too. New York accommodates us and we celebrate our function here."

They possess all the values that make for tremendous success in America."
