First of all sorry for the wrong timestamp on the arrival time. Having issues with time stamp on GoPro footages... Correct time is 5:37 PM making it a 5 and a half hour trip total. We took a lot of breaks so it's possible to get it done faster. Google maps had us estimate around 3 but if you're carrying backpacks like us, you'll probably take some breaks to rest your shoulders.
This video is going to let you know how to get to Pai, a popular backpacker destination, from Chiang Mai. This is a popular trip for those that are slightly more adventurous and I highly recommending taking a scooter or motorcycle from ChiangMai to Pai as it's one of the most amazing roads I have had a chance to travel on in South East Asia. It's going to sure beat being packed into a mini bus being thrown around the 700 plus curves this scenic route is going to throw at you.
It's also highly recommended as the roads are recently paved, and there isn't much traffic, making it one of the safest long distance scooter trips you can venture out on to get a feel for it. Who knows, maybe after this trip you're going to want to do the famous trip up or down Vietnam on a scooter or motorcycle.
The scooters are about 5 dollars to rent per day. We rented one for a whole week in Chiang Mai to see the sights there and simply took the same motorcycle to and back to Pai. We were able to make the journey on a tank and a half of gas. The fuel costs came out to be about a little over 5 dollars. Basically nothing....
In this video, you will see an overall explanation of how to get to Pai with maps, directions, and videos of the key sections of the journey. Most of the journey will be on the 107 road and 1095. We were worried that we would miss a turn or not have GPS signal but after having traveled it, it's really easier said than done. I honestly thing you don't even need GPS because the signage is quite clear. Check out the video for the key turning points.
We also discuss the rest stops and bathroom break locations we stopped by. I highly recommend the 7-11 right at the intersection of where the hwy 1095 and 107 meet. The bathrooms are clean and you also have the option to have lunch at a nice reasonably priced cafe with a view if you have time. I remember the price per dish to be around 3 dollars so it's not expensive. We simply opted for a 7-11 Panini and Rice Burger with Coconut water. You can do that as well.
We also recommend you drop by Tesco hypercenter if you need some supplies or snacks. Mayu got these peanut butter crackers which I was thankful for as route 1095 which is about 2/3rds of the journey, has almost nothing on it asides from a few remote villages. You'll find some street vendors selling fruit etc... but it may not be the best idea as I have no idea how sanitary everything is. We saw only one other 7-11 on 1095 but it was close to the junction and most of stretch will provide you little option for eating or filling up gas. Can't remember any major gas stations which shouldn't be an issue however because a tank is more than enough to last you the whole trip. Just remember to fill up at one of the numerous gas stations you see on 107.
