This is J’ouvert in Brooklyn, a celebration that begins at 2am on the morning of Labor Day. Just as they do every year, thousands gathered in Grand Army Plaza on September 4th to celebrate this Caribbean tradition that originated in Trinidad.
J’ouvert is French for daybreak, and in the Caribbean it signals the start of Carnival. In Brooklyn it kicks off the festivities related to the West Indian Day Parade, the largest parade in New York City with about 3 million annual attendees (think of the Labor Day festivities as Brooklyn’s version of Carnival).
Many of the participants cover themselves in oil or paint, and colored powder is thrown everywhere. The costumes are something to behold, often themed around mischievous beings like devils with horns and wings. The origins of J'ouvert coincide with the emancipation from slavery in 1838. Africans finally had the opportunity not only to participate in Carnival, but to embrace it as an expression of their new-found freedom.
J’ouvert is one of our most authentic and culturally significant events, still going strong despite the situation in Brooklyn of newcomers trying to shut down our local Black traditions. We won’t let them. 🎶🎨🕺
