The prime minister has warned normality is “some way off” as ministers prepare plans for vaccine passports and continuing some restrictions after June.
Boris Johnson’s roadmap to freedom sees pubs, restaurants, sports stadiums and indoor meetings all reopen by 21st June. However, ministers have warned some restrictions may have to stay in place, including social distancing, mask mandates and a potential COVID passport scheme. This plan would see Brits requiring a vaccine or negative coronavirus test to access certain areas, such as sports games or nightclubs.
Government scientists are uncertain as to how effective vaccines will be at preventing future waves of coronavirus, especially against new strains of COVID-19. Boris Johnson urged Brits to take up the vaccine to help end the pandemic and lockdown measures.
The government is due to offer the public two free coronavirus tests every week in another move aimed at controlling the virus.
Meanwhile, coronavirus deaths and cases have plummeted in recent weeks as over 60% of the adult population in the UK have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine. Against this background, the government are determined to stick to their reopening plans, with pub gardens and non-essential shops to open next Monday.
