OTA TV Ruling made on ATSC 1.0 sunset. FCC extends 'substantially similar rule' - that ATSC 1.0 television broadcasts must continue for 4 more years - OTA television. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) released a 73- page report on June 23, 2023, that addressed several facets of the ATSC 3.0 or Nextgen TV rollout. One topic in particular is of great importance to millions of over the air television viewers across the US, who use a TV antenna to receive local broadcast TV stations. In this report the FCC has extended the ‘substantially similar rule’ to now expire in July of 2027. This rule requires broadcasters to provide at least one free broadcast TV signal in the current TV broadcast standard ATSC 1.0, alongside its ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV signal. This requirement was set to expire in July of this year. Simply put, the sunset, or shutdown of the current broadcast standard, ATSC 1.0, will be delayed for 4 more years, ensuring viewers can continue to access free over the air television they enjoy.
