With debt at a record high in the Northern Territory, Country Liberal Party (CLP) Leader Lia Finocchiaro says if elected her government would introduce measures to cut costs and grow the economy.
Three days before the Northern Territory election on August 22, Ms Finochiaro faced off against Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Territory Alliance leader Terry Mills in the first and only televised debate hosted by Sky News.
Total debt in the territory has increased from $1.8 billion to $8.2 billion since the Labor government was elected in 2016.
Speaking of real policies which the CLP would enact, Ms Finochiaro said she would ensure no government ministers would be allowed to travel business class, CEO’s of departments would be made to live within their budgets and she would alter certain policies in a bid to grow the economy.
Two years ago, the Labor government introduced a hybrid mining tax “which has seen us plummet in the Fraser mining survey index to make us a very unfavourable destination to invest,” she told Sky News.
“We’ve said we will bring in an ad valorem model immediately to ensure we send a signal to the world that the territory is the best place to invest."
