On June 24, 2020, USAID's Building Healthy Cities project (BHC) co-hosted a webinar with Anant National University as part of its By Design knowledge-sharing platform. Speakers included Professor Ashima Banker (Professor & Director of the Master's program in Urban Design, Anant National University), Dr. Anuradha Jain (USAID India), Rejeet Matthews (Head, Urban Development, World Resources Institute – India) and Amanda Pomeroy-Stevens (Project Director, USAID Building Healthy Cities project). The webinar explored how land-use approaches, design principles, and regulations can guide more healthy and liveable cities in India. Indore, a Smart City where BHC works, has taken ground-breaking steps to improve the health of its citizens including bioremediation of legacy waste sites. Through BHC’s innovative systems mapping approach, the project has identified community-supported solutions to further improve the health of residents, including the creation of a legalized food hawking space, and the establishment of a community-led pollution control approach (specifically focused on air pollution). The webinar also explored additional regulatory and implementing tools for Indian Smart Cities.
The USAID-funded Building Healthy Cities (BHC) project is refocusing city policies, planning, and services with a multi-sectoral health equity lens while improving data-driven decision-making for Smart Cities in Indore, India, Makassar, Indonesia, Kathmandu, Nepal, and Da Nang, Vietnam.
