Bulgarian banknotes are known for being absolutely gorgeous. Every note features a different historical figure or monument, and the colors and patterns are just stunning. For example, the 50 lev note features the ancient Thracian ruler, Orpheus, alongside an image of the Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The deep blue color scheme and intricate details make it truly one of a kind.

But beauty aside, Bulgarian banknotes also have a rich history. Prior to the fall of communism, Bulgaria had a very limited amount of banknotes in circulation. In fact, there were only three denominations available: 1 lev, 2 leva, and 5 leva. It wasn't until the early 90s that the Bulgarian National Bank started producing more banknotes in higher denominations.

Nowadays, there are a total of six different banknotes in circulation: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 leva. Each one features a different notable Bulgarian figure or landmark.
