Mt. Ruapehu is New Zealand's tallest and most active volcano. Situated at the southern end of the North Island's volcanic plateau the mountain rises to a level of 9.177 feet (2,797 metres).
With three main peaks, Mt. Ruapehu strikes an awe-inspiring site as she dominates the landscape of the desert volcanic plateau along with her sisters Mt. Naruahoe and Mt Tongariro. The latter gives its name to the national park within which they stand. Tongariro National Park was New Zealand's first national park.
Whakapapa was the first established Ski field on the mountain, located on the western slopes above the iconic hotel, Chateau Tongariro. Later Turoa on the southern slopes was added as well as Tukino which is 4-wheel drive access only on the eastern slopes.
The top car park and base of the chairlifts was known as Top o' the Bruce, but the name seems to have disappeared.
