(1 Jul 2020) Buenos Aires restarted a strict lockdown on Wednesday that will last until July 17, after a continued relaxation of the measures aimed to reduce the spread of the new coronavirus.
Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez reintroduced the measures after the capital Buenos Aires reported an increase of hospital bed occupancy.
Hospitals are operating at more than half of their capacity in the extended suburban Buenos Aires.
Thousands of businesses were closed, exercising on the street is restricted, but children are still allowed to go out during weekends.
Although the measures enjoyed widespread support in the first months, they lost popularity after more than one hundred days of confinement.
Amid the renewed lockdown, delivery workers staged a protest calling for better working conditions as they are some of the few still allowed in the streets.
According to a Johns Hopkins University tally, Argentina reported on Wednesday more than 64,500 COVID-19 cases and 1,300 deaths.
