Time to take a trip to Cuba my friends. One of the many things I love about learning the guitar is how you can learn different music from different cultures and how it can transport you around the world. This song is from the mega popular Buena Vista Social Club and all though it is built around a Cuban Bolero this song is popular in all of latin America, from Mexcio to Argentina, but it is MEGA popular in the Caribbean and Colombia. You can play this song on a park bench in any park in the entire country of Colombia and somebody will sing the words with you! That is because it is very popular in Colombia, and Colombians are a very outgoing culture who don't really have a concept of personal space and will come up sit right next to you and sing along! It really is a fun culture and outside of Cuba Colombia enjoys this type of music the most, along with Venezuela.
You'll need a capo for the 5th fret as the progression passes through the Dm - F - Gm - A chords, by playing a capo on the 5th fret you can remove the F and Gm barre chords, of course you are always free to play the barre chords shapes if you want. With a capo on the 5th fret you will use Am - C - Dm - E shapes for the progression. The progression and strum pattern will be strummed in 16ths, with a mute and a change on the & the actual strum pattern can be a little tricky but as always we will take it piece by piece and break it down nice and slowly so you can make sure that you can play this classic and beautiful song note fore note. We will also use some walk ups and walk downs with the D minor scale that are used to walk up from the F note to the G minor and walk down from the A chord to the D minor giving the progression flavor and taste. If you are going to sing it you can use them while you sing or you can use them in instrumental parts as the song has many instrumental breaks and the walk ups and downs can give that part when you are not singing a little bit of flavor.
