⇊ ----- RECIPE BELOW ----- ⇊
So many of us are craving Asian food, so we did what we did best and shared our recipe to you! Hong shao niu rou (savoury soy sauce braised beef) is a recipe that slow cooks beef (or pork, whatever meat you like), with a sweet, soy sauce flavour. This is typically made with pork belly, but we decided to use whatever we had and used beef shank.
MARINATING THE MEAT:
1/2 lb of whatever pork or beef cut you want
3 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp shao xing cooking wine
PREPPING THE OTHER POT INGREDIENTS
2-3 cloves of minced garlic
2-3 slices of ginger
2 diced potatoes
2-3 star anise
2 tbsp dark soy sauce
1/3 cup rock sugar
4 cups of water
2 tsp Chinese five spice
OPTIONAL:
2 boiled eggs
1 cup of your favourite veggies (Gai Lan is used in the video)
STEPS:
1. Wash your choice of meat and dice into small pieces. Marinate with 3 tbsp light soy sauce and 1bsp of shao xing cooking wine. Set aside for ~20 minutes.
2. Mince 2-3 cloves of minced garlic. Cut 2-3 slices of ginger. Dice 2 potatoes. Set aside.
3. On a medium-high heat wok, add oil and cook the marinated meat, minced garlic, ginger and cook the meat until lightly browned.
4. Add rock sugar, star anise, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, and 4 cups of water into the wok. Add 2 tsp Chinese five spice.
5. Set heat to medium-low and simmer for a MINIMUM of 20 minutes (the longer you simmer, the more tender your meat will be!)
6. Add the diced potatoes and add more water (enough to cover the potatoes). Simmer for another 30 minutes (OR MORE). Optional to add 2 boiled eggs (so that it soaks up the flavour).
7. Once the sauce is thickened, serve the meat with rice and your choice of veggies! Enjoy!
