Coal still supplies just over a third of global electricity generation even though it is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel. More than 8 billion tonnes are used every year to provide power, steel and cement and heating. While carbon capture technologies have potential to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, we cannot use them as an excuse to keep creating more emissions.
