I decided to learn "The Attitude Song" for my first drum cover not only because it was very challenging for me, but also because this song has very special meaning for me.
I first heard this song on a tear out record (aka: sound page) in Guitar Player magazine. The interview with Steve Vai that accompanied the sound page changed my life! He inspired me to take studying the instrument more seriously. In addition, the interview helped kick start my fascination with transcribing and education. Had I not read the article, I wouldn't have written my books, "The Art of Transcribing-Drum Set Book 1 & 2". I could go on and on, but for now I'll keep it short and simply say, "Thanks Steve for all your inspiration!" Also, I couldn't be happier that my friend Jeremy Colson is Steve's drummer, a gig he's had for almost a decade!
My approach to "The Attitude Song":
I did my best to learn the song as close to the way Chris Frazier played it. His parts fit the song perfectly! I added some embellishments that I heard Mike Mangini play live and I also added a few of my own.
Recorded with an iPad using GarageBand and a Tascam iM2 stereo mic.
Special thanks to Tommy Rickard and John Cunningham for your help.
