Day 91
I used to refer to my paralyzed arm as “my funny hand.” That made it ok for other people to refer to my disability that way, perpetuating harm that something was wrong with my body. Why did I think it was ok to talk about my body that way? I’m learning and evolving with you, too.
Video description/transcript: Tiffany is a Taiwanese American woman speaking to the camera. “Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?” Two screen recordings from 2018 and 2016 of Tiffany referring to her arm in talks as her “funny hand.” Back to Tiffany today, “I used to refer to my paralyzed arm as my funny hand. The way we talk about our disabilities shapes the way other people see our disabilities too. And referring to a part of my body or anyone else’s body for that matter as funny is not very nice. All of this to say that I’m learning and evolving alongside you too.”
