Frank W. Woolworth, founder of Woolworth 5 and 10 variety store in 1879, wanted to build his headquarters downtown New York City. Purchasing space in Manhattan, Cass Gilbert was hired as architect and began working on what was supposed to be a 12 to 16 story building. By completion in 1913, after many changes, a 60 story building standing at 792 feet was completed. Standing as the world's tallest building, the Woolworth Building was headquarters to Woolworth as well as the Irving National Exchange Bank until 1931, the structure was surpassed in 1930 by the Chrysler Building - also in New York City. Today, after numerous renovations, the lower portion houses offices while the top portion has been remodeled for residences.
