- this guitar is still for sale, however, the Reverb listing has been taken down.
Les Paul, as part of his contract, was supposed to get the 1st guitar made of every new line. This is the story of Gibson's biggest mistake where they accidentally gave away #1 of one of the most beautiful Les Pauls to be produced in the 70s.
In the Norlin Era of Gibson, I make the argument that the "The Les Paul" is the most historically significant run of guitars to be made. They demonstrate great attention to detail and used the finest woods available in an era that is mainly known for cutting costs and using less-than traditional methods.
I love the Norlin era. They did some very unique special edition guitars such as the Artisan, 25/50, Sparkle Top Deluxes, Artist and Spotlight Special. The fanciest of them all the the The Les Paul.
There were 77 TLPs made - 59 in Natural and 18 in Wine Red. Of those 77, there were 3 Famous Natural ones ( #1, #25, #??) and one famous Wine Red (#26.)
Heart's guitarist owned #?? and Steve Howe owned #26. #1 was used at the Grammies in 1976 by Les Paul when he played with Chet Atkins. When it was sent back to Gibson for final appointments after the show, it was mistakenly sent to a retail store for sale. Dennis Chandler then purchased it and Les Paul was sent #25 as a replacement.
