This is the Burley Griffin Way (Main Rd 254) level crossing at Yoogali, located on the outskirts of Griffith NSW, Australia. This crossing is on the Junee to Griffith line and is situated about 3km from the junction at Griffith. I have been unable to find the installation date for these signals, though I suspect it was some time in the late 1960's or early 1970's.
These signals had been subjected to numerous vehicle strikes over the years, with some of the original equipment being replaced. The signal on the northern side of the crossing had it's original McKenzie & Holland lights and teardrop bell, although the original mast was damaged at some time and was replaced by a newer one. The signal on the southern side had it's original mast, although some of the original McKenzie & Holland lights had been damaged and replaced by newer Western Cullen Hayes lights (which have also taken a beating). The combination of lights looks a bit odd, as they sit at slightly different heights.
This crossing and the nearby intersection are notoriously bad and have seen many accidents over the years. You can see in the video how the traffic often banks up over the crossing, with vehicles sometimes stopping on the tracks. Fortunately an upgrade commenced here in April 2020, the road is being widened and the intersection upgraded with traffic lights. These old signals were ripped out and the crossing upgraded with new gated signals on August 23, 2020, their operation will be integrated with the new traffic lights.
Train info:
In the first scene, locomotives NR20 and NR53 are proceeding to Griffith to collect their train load of containers. They will form train number 3CM3 from Griffith to Melbourne, which can be seen in the second scene.
Filmed on May 16, 2017.
