PORTUGAL MOTOR RALLY
Portuguese Auto Rally won by Markku Alen (Finland).
Markku Alen of Finland, driving a Lancia, won the Portuguese auto rally on Saturday for the fifth time. Alen had dominated the four-day, 2,090-km event, the third in this year's world championship, which was marred by a tragic crash that killed a young spectator and injured 13 other people. The 36-year-old Finn clocked up 7 hours 9 minutes and 39 seconds over the 37 timed stages, along asphalt and dirt roads. Second was Frenchman Jean Ragnotti in a Renault in 7:12:32, and third was Kenneth Eriksson of Sweden in a Volkswagen Golf in 7:14:37. Only 36 of the original 97 drivers from 14 countries completed the rally, which started and ended in the Lisbon suburb of Estoril.
