Shanghai’s Education Commission has set out a new goal this year to build or expand 30 kindergartens in densely populated areas where newcomers to Shanghai tend to settle down. More daycare services will be available for children under the age of 3, this includes a capacity increase of at least 7,000 children in community centers, and 3,000 more spots in public kindergartens. The commission also wants to see at least 80% of the city’s kindergartens offering daycare services for children under the age of 3.
Jiading Tianhua Kindergarten is located in suburban Shanghai near the border of Jiangsu Province. The school has plenty of outdoor space for the children to burn off their energy. A wooded area just a few steps from the gate, is one of their favorite playgrounds. When the weather is nice, teachers will take them out to observe the plants and animals or do handicrafts. The kindergarten provides boots for each child to step into puddles and mud.
In downtown Shanghai, Yinlian Kindergarten in Hongkou District is in a neighborhood compound built in the 1990s. As its two-floor building has limited indoor space, the principal has been making efforts to make full use of the surrounding area for children to have fun.
